Everything you need to know — routes, costs, preparation, and expert tips for a successful summit
Everything you need to know before your Tanzania adventure.
For first-time climbers, we recommend the Machame Route (6 or 7 days) or the Lemosho Route (7 days). Both offer excellent scenery, good acclimatisation profiles, and strong summit success rates. The Machame route is often called the "whisky route" for its variety of landscapes, while Lemosho provides a more remote wilderness experience with fewer crowds.
Most Kilimanjaro climbs take between 6 and 9 days, depending on the route. Longer itineraries (7–9 days) offer better acclimatisation and significantly higher summit success rates. We recommend at least 7 days for most routes to allow your body to adjust to the altitude gradually.
Tanzania is a year-round destination. The dry season (June–October) is ideal for safaris and Kilimanjaro climbing, with clear skies and excellent wildlife viewing. The short rains (November–December) bring fewer crowds and lush green landscapes. The long rains (March–May) offer the best rates and dramatic skies. The Great Migration is visible throughout the year as the herds move across the Serengeti.
Our Kilimanjaro packages include park fees, camping or hut fees, professional guides and porters, all meals on the mountain, sleeping equipment, AMREF evacuation cover, airport transfers, and pre-departure briefings. We also provide complimentary water bottles and energy snacks. Optional extras include tipping guidelines, travel insurance, and gear rental.
The Great Migration is a continuous cycle. January–March sees the calving season in the southern Serengeti, with thousands of newborn wildebeest. April–May the herds move northwest. June–July brings dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti River. August–October sees the herds in the northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings. Each phase offers unique wildlife spectacles.
