As you climb Kilimanjaro, you pass through five distinct ecological zones — each one a completely different world, from tropical rainforest to Arctic ice.
800 – 1,800 m
The lush lower slopes where local farming communities grow coffee, bananas and other crops.
1,800 – 2,800 m
Dense tropical forest alive with birdsong, colobus monkeys and giant tree ferns.
2,800 – 4,000 m
Open landscapes with giant lobelias, groundsels and extraordinary high-altitude plants.
4,000 – 5,000 m
A stark, moon-like landscape of volcanic rock, scree and extreme temperature swings.
5,000 – 5,895 m
The icy crown of Kilimanjaro — glaciers, snow and the Roof of Africa.
Each route offers a different experience. Compare duration, difficulty, scenery and summit success rates to find your perfect path.

Kilimanjaro is one of the Seven Summits and the only one you can walk to the top of. No ropes, no technical climbing — just you, the mountain and the journey of a lifetime.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but certain months offer better conditions. Here's what to expect throughout the year.
The driest and warmest months. Clear skies, excellent visibility and the most popular time to climb. Expect higher trail traffic but the best overall conditions.
Fewer crowds, clear mornings and beautiful scenery. A quieter and more intimate mountain experience with good summit conditions.
Light afternoon showers possible. Fewer climbers, lush green landscapes and excellent rates. Mornings are usually clear.
The wettest period with heavy rain and poor visibility. We do not recommend this season for climbing, though some experienced trekkers choose it for solitude.
Weather can change quickly on the mountain. Your guide will advise on conditions before departure.
