Climb Kilimanjaro's Scenic Route to the Roof of Africa
Experience one of Tanzania's most scenic Kilimanjaro routes, combining dramatic landscapes, diverse vegetation and an unforgettable journey to Uhuru Peak.
The Machame Route, affectionately known as the "Whisky Route," is one of Kilimanjaro's most popular and scenic pathways to the summit. From the moment you step through Machame Gate, you are immersed in lush rainforest alive with birdsong and the rustle of colobus monkeys overhead.
As you ascend, the landscape transforms dramatically — from dense tropical rainforest to open moorland, from otherworldly alpine desert to the stark, icy beauty of the Arctic summit zone. Each day brings new vistas, new ecosystems, and a deeper sense of accomplishment.
The six-day Machame itinerary is designed to maximise your chances of a successful summit while delivering an authentic mountain experience. The route follows the celebrated "climb high, sleep low" principle, with an essential acclimatisation day at Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. On summit night, you'll trek under a canopy of stars to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 metres above sea level — to witness the sunrise from the highest point in Africa.
The Machame Route is widely regarded as one of the finest paths to Kilimanjaro's summit. It combines dramatic scenery, excellent acclimatisation, and an unforgettable mountain experience.

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, nestled at 1,800 metres on the mountain's southern flank. After completing registration and meeting your mountain crew, you set off along a well-defined trail that winds through dense, misty rainforest draped in moss and orchids.
The path climbs steadily, crossing streams and passing giant tree ferns as tropical birds call from the canopy. As you ascend, the forest gradually thins and the air cools. By late afternoon, you emerge at Machame Camp on the heath plateau, where sweeping views of the plains below reward your first day on the mountain.
Day two marks a dramatic transition. You leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where giant heathers and lobelias line the trail. The vegetation thins as you climb, replaced by open moorland with extraordinary views of Kilimanjaro's western ice fields and the sprawling plains below.
The trek is shorter today but continues at a steady pace through an increasingly barren and beautiful landscape. By afternoon, you arrive at Shira Camp, perched on a high plateau with panoramic views that stretch to the distant horizon. This is one of the most photogenic camps on the entire route.
Today is one of the most important days of the climb — a vital acclimatisation day that follows the celebrated "climb high, sleep low" principle. You begin by trekking across the Shira Plateau toward the imposing Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation rising to 4,630 metres.
The ascent is gradual but demanding, and the thin air makes every step deliberate. Reaching Lava Tower is a milestone — you are now deep in the alpine desert zone. After a rest, you descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, where giant senecio plants and glacier-carved cliffs create an almost otherworldly landscape. The descent helps your body adjust to altitude and sets you up perfectly for the days ahead.
The morning begins with one of the most exciting challenges on the Machame Route — the ascent of the Barranco Wall. This steep rock scramble requires hands-on climbing in places, but the exposure and the views are exhilarating. Your guides will choose the safest and most scenic line.
Once over the wall, you traverse across open ridges with dramatic drops on either side, before descending into the sheltered Karanga Valley. The camp sits in a sheltered bowl surrounded by towering cliffs and glacier remnants, offering a dramatic setting for your penultimate night on the mountain.
You ascend steadily through a stark, high-altitude landscape of volcanic scree and bare rock. The trail is exposed and the air thin, but the sense of anticipation builds with every step. Ahead of you, the massive south face of Kilimanjaro dominates the skyline.
Barafu Camp sits on a narrow ridge with commanding views toward Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After an early dinner and a thorough briefing from your lead guide on the summit attempt, you rest early. Tonight, you sleep with the knowledge that you will rise in the small hours for the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.
At approximately midnight, you rise, layer up, and begin the final ascent by headlamp. The trail climbs steeply across volcanic scree under a canopy of stars, the beam of your headlamp joining hundreds of others winding up the mountain.
You reach Stella Point at 5,756 metres — a milestone where many climbers pause — before continuing along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. The final approach is demanding, but as the first light of dawn breaks over the African horizon, you stand on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro: 5,895 metres above sea level, the Roof of Africa.
After photographs and a moment to absorb the magnitude of your achievement, you begin the long descent. The trail drops rapidly through the alpine desert, past Barafu and down through the forest to Mweka Gate, where your vehicle awaits. This is both the most physically demanding and the most emotionally profound day of the entire journey.
